Our Story

Most people will attribute it to bad timing when famed LA pastry chef, Katherine Benvenuti relocated to Portland in 2018. Prior to that, she had a long successful stint in some of California’s more popular cafes, restaurants and dessert shops and the young mother of three wanted to take a break to raise her kids. Pretty soon, an irresistible opportunity knocked on her door when Portland’s popular ChefStable restaurant group presented her the chance to open her own bakery in downtown Portland as a full partner.

For the next 10 months or so, Benvenuti forged the blueprint for her bakery section ranging from classic breads made personal with locally-milled grain flours and unexpected flavor twists. From breakfast table staples to fancier snack picks like sticky buns swaddled in miso caramel and dark brownie tarts under torched meringue, the innovative baker and pastry chef came up with an impressive selection that was sure to capture the hearts of Portland dessert and pastry fans. Opening date was set in the middle of March 2019 at the former Trifecta Tavern & Bakery space on SE 6th, but the plan was put on hold when Gov. Kate Brown issued the Covid pandemic restaurant mandate just two days earlier.

Talk of reinventing during trying times, the 30-year old Benvenuti decided to return to the kitchen during the weeks that followed. Bent on making a break even amidst the pandemic, the feisty baker went on to test drive more ideas until she came up with a brilliant option—a bakery takeout and delivery.

So on weekends from late March to the end of July that year, people were frantically darting in and out of the bakery’s still unmarked door bringing along with them these mysterious brunch boxes. Inside these boxes were the kind of brunch every artisan bread and pastry lover will brave the long lines for—a selection of tasty and delectable pastry delights oozing with pure, carb-rippling happiness. A sample haul would include cornmeal scones clad in roasted strawberries, chocolate-walloped babka, plus Bar King’s now famous open-faced croque monsieur sporting beautiful homemade brioche and a roof of charred asparagus.

As word of mouth circulated and after partnering with local delivery services in Portland, a loyal and unstoppable following emerged.

Fast forward to today, Bar King Bakery Takeout + Delivery now operates daily from Tuesdays to Sundays. With a full-on pastry case where one can gaze, pick, and choose, we’re sure to have something that will fill your heart’s delight whenever you need to get that pastry fix!

We've Come a Long Way!

From those weekend brunch boxes going in and out of our unmarked doors, Bar King now offers beautiful assortment of breads, pastries and desserts for takeout and delivery. We also have a small in-store section where you can sit-down and enjoy any of our treats with a cup of your favorite Good Coffee brew. Bar King also accepts pre-ordered cakes and desserts for all occasions.

Our small kitchen may have grown tremendously but since Day 1, Bar King had committed itself to giving its customers the highest quality breads, cakes, pastries and treats with convenience, affordability and the best service!

I'd walk a mile for their delicious sticky buns swaddled in miso caramel! Another favorite of the entire family is their dark chocolate buckwheat brownie tarts which are definitely "to-die-for"!

Their artisan breads and pastries are the perfect match for a cup of my favorite Good Coffee blend. I work at the building across the street and Bar King has aways been my favorite go-to place for breakfast and coffee breaks.

Even the kids love it.
What I love about Bar King is that there is a treat for everyone in the family. My personal favorite is their open-faced croque-monsieur while my husband makes sure we never run out of their coffee cake. Even the kids are going nuts over their donuts!
